Despite its somewhat edgy title, “You Are a Badass” is a fabulous read that simply must be relished by those ready to start living their best life. Rarely a book comes along that I demand everyone in my inner circle read, but this self-help bible is a true gem. Loaded with suggestions on believing in yourself, going for your dreams, and how to be happy until you get there, this book has become a staple on my bookshelf that I bring out over and over again to keep my mindset in optimal condition.
“Maybe, if you put your disbelief aside, roll up your sleeves, take some risks and totally go for it, you’ll wake up one day and realize you’re living the kind of life you used to be jealous of.”
― Jen Sincero, “You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life.”
Jen, a success coach, guides us through exercises to help us find our true passion such as asking us what we are doing in our wildest dreams or what we could do if we had unlimited time, energy and money. She also discusses how to dust off the goals we have sat on the back of the shelf and finally make them into our realities. “Keep your thoughts directed at your goal, do everything that you DO know how to do to make it happen, decide with unwavering determination that it will happen, and be on the lookout for the opportunity.” Miss Sincero goes on to explain that once you know what your passion is in life, you should start living in such a way to realize that passion. “If your lifelong dream is to be poolside with the president,” she explains, “you should begin living in the way that someone who hangs out with the president lives. Search for a great bathing suit, start having conversations with people who can get you into the White House, and believe that your goal is already being realized.” As odd as this may sound to some, I found this concept of “walking the walk” to be extraordinarily helpful. After all, focusing on your plans and conducting your day in the same manner as someone with your dream job would can have a pretty radical change on your lifestyle. “The moment you have the audacity to start believing in the not-yet seen, your reality will begin to shift.”
Though you won’t find statistical data or evidence based research in this book, you will discover plenty of life affirming quotes from some of the most powerful influencers of the last several centuries. Presented in a warm, entertaining manner that keeps even the most finicky reader content, “You Are a Badass” is the perfect book to curl up with this fall. I highly recommend this not-so-serious read for a push out of your daily routine and perhaps discovering what lies beyond. “Nobody who ever accomplished anything big or new or worth raising a celebratory fist in the air did it from their comfort zone.”
